What to Expect During the Ceremony?
Each year, Nirvana Singapore selects an auspicious date to conduct the Urn Placement Ceremony, allowing customers to place symbolic items of prosperity and good fortune into their pre-arranged urns as part of a blessing ritual.
This meaningful practice is believed to represent wishes for longevity, prosperity, and continued blessings for the future.
During the ceremony, attendees gather at the Block B Main Hall of Nirvana Singapore and stand before their pre-arranged urns. A Shifu leads the chanting session, which lasts approximately two hours. After the prayers, staff members assist attendees in placing their symbolic blessing items into the urns and wrapping them in red cloth. Attendees will then carry the urns to the columbarium suite and place them into their pre-purchased niches. Many participants find the ceremony deeply meaningful and reassuring upon its completion.
Who the Ceremony Is For
The Urn Placement Blessing Ceremony is for customers who have pre-purchased a columbarium niche. It is a pre-planning ritual — participants place blessing items into the urn that will one day hold their own remains, during their lifetime, rather than following a bereavement.
In Chinese tradition, making one's own arrangements in advance is understood as tian fu shou (添福寿) — an act that adds to one's blessings and longevity, rather than an inauspicious one. The Blessing Items and What They Represent
Attendees place each item into a blessing bag in sequence, which is then set inside the urn. Items used in past ceremonies have included:
- Glass crystal ingot with dragon motifs — representing wealth and honour
- Yellow crystal pineapple — ong lai in Hokkien, a homophone for the arrival of good fortune
- Jade ruyi — signifying that matters unfold smoothly and according to one's wishes
- Qianlong copper coins — symbolising enduring blessings passed down to descendants
Once the items are in place, the urn is wrapped in red cloth. Red signifies auspiciousness and protection in Chinese custom, and its use here underlines that this is a blessing ritual rather than a funeral rite.
Ceremony Dates and Registration
Nirvana Memorial Garden holds several Urn Placement Blessing Ceremonies each year. Dates are set according to auspicious days selected by the Shifu, so they differ from year to year. Recent ceremonies have been held at the Block B Level 1 Main Hall, starting at 10.30am sharp.
Places at each ceremony are limited and released on a first-come, first-served basis, with registration typically opening several weeks beforehand. Recent ceremonies have carried a registration fee of $88 per group. Because places tend to fill quickly, we suggest registering your interest with us in advance so we can notify you as soon as the next date is announced.
What to Note on the Day
Please allow time to arrive, complete registration, and take your place before the chanting begins. The ceremony occupies roughly half a day in total — around two hours of chanting, followed by the walk to the niche to place the urn. Modest, respectful dress is appropriate.
Please note that routine urn storage service is not available on the day of the ceremony. If you have other matters to attend to that day, check with our team beforehand.
