The Meaning Behind a Buddha Lamp Offering

In Buddhist tradition, light symbolises wisdom dispelling ignorance. Offering a lamp is among the oldest and most widely practised forms of offering: the donor dedicates a lamp kept continuously lit before the Buddha, with the wish that its light benefits themselves, their family, and their departed loved ones.

Unlike a one-time ceremony, a Buddha Lamp Offering is a dedication that continues through the year. The lamp remains lit whether or not you are present, which is why many families see it as a quiet, continuous expression of filial devotion — particularly suited to those who cannot visit often.

When Families Make This Offering

A Buddha Lamp Offering can be arranged at any time of the year. These are the occasions we most often assist families with:

• At the turn of the Lunar New Year, praying for a safe and smooth year ahead
• On the birthday of an elder in the family, praying for health and longevity
• When a family member is unwell, or facing surgery, examinations, or another significant passage
• After the passing of a loved one, arranged alongside the 49-day prayer service or a Kong Teck ceremony, dedicating merit to the departed
• On a death anniversary, or during remembrance occasions such as Qing Ming

Where the Offering Is Made

Buddha Lamp Offerings are placed within the Buddha halls at Nirvana Memorial Garden, including the Da Xiong Bao Dian (大雄宝殿) in Block B — the grand hall completed in 2023 and consecrated over a three-day blessing ceremony. The halls are quiet, dignified, and air-conditioned throughout the day, so families can pay their respects in comfort.

Many families combine the visit with time at their loved one's niche in the columbarium, or with prayers at Lin San Temple. If you have installed an ancestral tablet, the lamp offering is commonly arranged together with tablet prayers.

Cost of a Buddha Worshipping Ceremony

This offering is available at two price points: $388 or $888 before GST, depending on the selected location and the facing of the Buddha altar.

The difference between the two lies in where the lamp sits relative to the Buddha altar and which part of the hall it occupies. The offering itself and the accompanying prayers are the same, so families choose according to their preference and budget.
